Team handball made its’ debut in 1936 for men, with a hiatus after that to 1972, and 1976 for women. The first tournament was played outdoors on a football pitch. The number of nations that have earned medals in the 24 tournaments that have been played so far is 22, with all except two coming from Europe. The current champions are Denmark for men which dethroned 2008 & 2012 winners France, and Russia for women. The latter took over from Athens 2008 and London 2012 champions Norway.
